Celebrated each April, National Minority Health Month (NMHM) is a time to raise awareness about the importance of improving the health of racial and ethnic minority communities while reducing health disparities across the nation. With its roots dating back to 1915, this monthly observance focuses on promoting health equity, improving healthcare access, and encouraging preventative care.
Historically, minority communities have faced significant health challenges, including higher rates of chronic diseases, limited healthcare access, and social factors that negatively influence their overall well-being. To address these gaps, healthcare providers must increase awareness, promote regular healthcare visits, and create culturally competent care environments to ensure all individuals receive the support they need.
“Over several generations, our local communities have become disengaged from healthcare for a number of reasons,” said Zepf Center Chief Administrative Officer Kimberly Resendez. “Whether it was caused by a lack of accessible care, traumatic experiences with healthcare providers, or lack of funds to receive care, it’s clear that these populations continued to be underserved. That’s where Zepf Center came in.”
For over 50 years, Zepf Center has been dedicated to providing accessible, integrated care for clients through its trauma-informed continuum of care. To support its continued focus on whole-person health, the agency launched its primary care office in 2023, bringing same-day and walk-in appointments to community members throughout the greater Toledo area.
Primary care is often the cornerstone of good health, but maintaining regular visits can be challenging for many. By providing an accessible, comfortable environment, Zepf Center Primary Care is focused on removing barriers to care and providing services—regardless of a client’s ability to pay.
Now celebrating two years in operation, the primary care office provides care for hundreds of community members. Because of its comprehensive continuum of care, Zepf Center clients not only experience fewer barriers to treatment but can also enjoy the convenience of addressing all aspects of their mental and physical health within one agency.
Annual check-ups with a primary care provider (PCP) can help detect and manage chronic conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure, and heart disease—illnesses that disproportionately impact minority communities. Establishing a strong relationship with a PCP provides the opportunity for early detection of health issues, personalized treatment plans, and ultimately, better health outcomes.
Avoiding routine check-ups can lead to severe health complications in the future but—even if it’s been a while since the last visit—taking proactive steps and scheduling regular appointments with a trusted provider is essential for long-term health.
In addition to early detection and the other associated benefits, preventative care can lead to a longer and healthier life for the client and their loved ones. Whether they need a routine check-up, chronic disease management, or wellness guidance, Zepf Center’s Primary Care team is ready to provide care for the whole family.
“I am incredibly proud of our Primary Care team and the services they offer for our community,” said Zepf Center CEO Deb Flores. “By providing truly accessible, person-centered primary care services, our community is empowered to prioritize their health and promote healthy futures for their families and loved ones.”
Zepf Center Primary Care is open 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. The clinic accepts all patients regardless of income or insurance but accepts most insurance plans including Medicaid and Medicare. Assistance on a sliding fee schedule is also available for those who qualify based on family size and income.
