This year, Zepf Center celebrates a significant milestone marking 50 years of dedicated service throughout Northwest Ohio. Since its founding in 1974, Zepf Center has solidified itself as a beacon of hope, providing comprehensive behavioral healthcare services and fostering a culture of compassion and recovery. This momentous occasion also serves as an opportunity to reflect on the agency’s rich history and the impact Zepf Center continues to make in the lives of clients, staff, and community members.
Zepf Center’s story began with a local vision to support individuals as they transitioned from the care of psychiatric hospitals back to the communities within Lucas County’s South catchment area. Named after Elizabeth A. Zepf, a passionate advocate for mental health services in Northwest Ohio, the agency started with a small but mighty team of 11 employees.
Over the years, Zepf Center experienced significant growth and expansion in its service offerings, locations, and staff. From the addition of satellite offices throughout Northwest Ohio to the introduction of new programs and services, the agency continues to evolve to meet the community's changing needs. Focusing on trauma-informed, person-first, comprehensive care, Zepf Center currently provides a wide range of mental health and recovery services, including outpatient treatment, substance abuse counseling, and vocational training.
Like many organizations in the field, Zepf Center has faced its fair share of challenges throughout the past 50 years. From industry advances, leadership changes, global pandemics, and more, the agency has remained resilient, adapting to new realities while staying true to its mission to be the leader in hope and recovery throughout Northwest Ohio.
Since Zepf Center’s founding in 1974, the mental health and recovery services field has changed immensely. Although treatment options continue to improve and stigma continues to subside, the current need for mental health care is at an all-time high. Because of this, innovation has always been vital to the agency’s existence and to the clients it serves. This is exemplified by Zepf Center’s groundbreaking work with peer support, its recent Sanctuary certification, and numerous national, state, and local accolades received over the years.
Reaffirming its commitment to high-level, innovative care, Zepf Center recently employed a twofold approach harnessing the power of AI to improve care for clients and increase staff support. Utilizing this new technology to enhance mental health screenings for clients and streamline documentation for field-based clinicians, Zepf Center providers can better manage their workload and continue to deliver excellent care.
In its 50th year, Zepf Center also began work on a multi-million dollar capital improvement project to expand Zepf Center’s crisis services and update its busiest locations. Facility upgrades include a mobile crisis staffing room, 23-hour observation unit, crisis intake interview rooms, an urgent psychiatric care unit, and an adult crisis stabilization unit. A new youth crisis stabilization unit will also be created—the first and only in the Toledo area.
“Throughout the past 50 years, Zepf Center has continued to be a force for good in the communities we serve,” said Zepf Center CEO Deb Flores. “Change can be difficult, but it is crucial for us to continue providing trauma-informed, high-quality care throughout Northwest Ohio.”
As the agency commemorates 50 years of service, we invite the community to join us in celebrating this milestone. Whether you have been a client, a supporter, or a member of our dedicated team, we thank you for being part of our journey. Together we look forward to many more years of serving Northwest Ohio and being the leaders in hope and recovery.
Zepf Center’s 50th anniversary is not just a time for celebration, but also a moment to honor the legacy of compassion, resilience, and service that has defined the organization for half a century. As we reflect on the past and look toward the future, one thing remains clear: Zepf Center will continue to be a beacon of hope and healing for generations to come.
