Over 500 community members gathered at Middlegrounds Metropark this past Saturday for the annual NAMIWalks event. Hosted by the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), 2024 participants raised over $100,000 to support mental health education, advocacy, and treatment in the Greater Toledo area. This year, Team Zepf is proud to be the second-highest fundraiser out of 67 teams, donating over $1,900 to support mental health advocacy in the surrounding community.
Founded in 1979, NAMI is a leading mental health organization dedicated to improving the lives of individuals and families affected by mental illness. From modest origins in Madison, WI, NAMI’s grassroots approach has grown into a nationwide movement with over 600 local affiliates. The organization provides advocacy, education, support, and public awareness to ensure that individuals living with mental health conditions can lead their lives without stigma and with reduced barriers to care.
An attending psychiatrist for over 20 years, Zepf Center’s Dr. Suzanne Brodbeck has a rich history of championing NAMI Greater Toledo. She initially learned about the organization while working as a mental health technician and continued to hear about NAMI’s incredible advocacy throughout her time in medical school and residency.
“NAMI offers incredible resources for those living with mental illness, their loved ones, and their communities,” Dr. Brodbeck said. “It’s so important that we continue to educate the public and reduce the stigma around mental health.”
Dr. Brodbeck became more involved with NAMI even as her career advanced. Not long after she joined the Board of Trustees for NAMI Greater Toledo, she was selected to serve as their President-Elect. Dr. Brodbeck went on to spend four years as President and six years total on the Board.
“NAMI programs are special because they aren’t just focused on helping the person living with mental illness,” she explained. “Their education, advocacy, and support also help loved ones, youth, and any community members who are impacted.”
Dr. Brodbeck’s support for NAMI doesn’t just extend to her Board involvement—she also makes a point to sponsor NAMIWalks each year and participate as an attendee.
Although NAMI hosts dozens of events and workshops throughout the year, one of its most impactful events is the annual NAMIWalks. As the nation’s largest mental health awareness and fundraising event, NAMIWalks brings together millions of participants throughout the country to raise awareness and funds for mental health services.
The funds raised through NAMIWalks support NAMI’s free, top-rated programs, including support groups, educational resources, and advocacy efforts. The event serves as a community unifier bringing together families and individuals affected by mental illness. Through the outpouring of support that accompanies NAMIWalks events, attendees help foster a sense of solidarity in their local communities.
Participants in NAMIWalks range from those personally affected by mental illness to supporters advocating for accessible mental health care and services. Each walk typically includes various activities such as educational booths, guest speakers, entertainment, and the walk itself.
NAMI Greater Toledo is a vital community partner for agencies like Zepf Center and the clients it serves. NAMI staff are crucial to connecting families to resources, facilitating innovative support groups and workshops, and tirelessly working to break down the stigma that surrounds mental health throughout the Toledo area.
By participating in and promoting NAMIWalks, community members help to spread the key message that mental healthcare is essential, and that mental illness should be addressed with the same seriousness and urgency as any physical health condition.
“Mental health is something that impacts us all,” said Zepf Center CEO Deb Flores. “We are fortunate to have dedicated partners like NAMI who support our mission to provide hope and recovery to those in our communities.”
Through its commitment to education, advocacy, and community involvement, NAMI continues to ensure that mental health is recognized as a critical part of overall health. Participating in NAMIWalks not only supports those affected by mental illness but also sends a powerful message that mental health matters and that no one should walk alone in their mental health journey.
