Each November, National Runaway Prevention Month (NRPM) is celebrated across the country to shine a light on youth homelessness. During this month, agencies like Zepf Center offer community programs and events to spotlight available resources and raise awareness for youth homelessness.

Isolated and vulnerable, youth experiencing homelessness are at an increased risk for human trafficking, violence and other threats to their physical and mental wellbeing. As the only shelter for runaway and homeless youth in Northwest Ohio, Safety Net at Zepf Center offers refuge, support and hope.

Safety Net provides 24/7/365 emergency shelter and counseling services for youth experiencing homelessness in Northwest Ohio. During NRPM, the Youth Services team will host community education events, share resources on Zepf Center social media and host awareness events for staff and clients.

This year, Zepf Center’s Youth Services team will be hosting the following community events to celebrate NRPM:

- Virtual Community Presentation – Nov. 2, 5:30-6:30 p.m. via Zoom

- Safety Net Tours – Nov. 9 & 30, 5:30-6:30 p.m.

- Community Walk & Wear Green Day – Nov. 16, 5:30-6:30 p.m.

Data from the National Runaway Safeline and Family & Youth Services Bureau reveals that approximately 4.2 million young people experience some form of homelessness in the United States each year, with even more experiencing crises that jeopardize their housing security. To combat youth housing insecurity, the Safety Net team uses its resources to go out into surrounding communities and provide support for local youth.

In addition to Safety Net, Zepf Center provides a wide range of youth mental health and crisis services. Through its integrated, person-centered care model, Zepf Center remains dedicated to creating hope and recovery throughout Northwest Ohio.

"More than 1.5 million children run away from home each year," said Linda Nordahl, chief integration officer at the Zepf Center. "We provide them with a safe space where they can find stability and support."

Because of Safety Net resources, young people throughout Northwest Ohio have access to the security and resources needed to live their lives. Additionally, their Street Outreach Program (SOP) offers a drop-in center for youth ages 12-21 who may need access to a hot meal, showers, laundry and information on community services.

These services are vital to the surrounding community and enable youth to find hope and support when they need it most. To learn more about NRPM and help shine a light on youth homelessness, watch Zepf Center’s social media for the latest events and updates, as well as opportunities to contribute to Safety Net and the ongoing battle against youth homelessness.
