Message from our CEO

Zepf Center has been creating hope and recovery for over 40 years. We are a place where our patients come to heal from trauma. No matter what we do, our work cannot be fully realized until racism is eradicated.

Long-standing systems of racial inequality has created health disparities for African Americans. They experience heart disease, diabetes, hypertension, and asthma at higher rates than the general population. We know that children who experience racism start life with an Adverse Childhood Experience (ACES), which will impact his/her mind, body, and soul for a lifetime. What the recent unrest further highlights is what African Americans know: racism is a dire threat to their physical and mental health.

We have to do better.

Without reform and intervention, all the work we do to heal trauma will continue to be undone.

Our agency has begun a collective healing by undertaking Sanctuary, a trauma-informed model. One of the benefits of being Sanctuary is living trauma-informed and being trauma-responsive. What this means for our African-American staff, residents, and patients: we are committed to building a workplace that is physically, emotionally, socially, and morally safe.

It is more important than ever to talk to one another, process your pain, and to find healing in our common humanity.

Zepf Center will continue to use our platforms to condemn racism and stand for justice; to share the impacts of trauma on communities of color; and to offer tools for coping and healing.
