Local University of Toledo Songfest to Benefit Zepf Center

Songfest is a grand philanthropic tradition that can be described as a song and dance performance by different University of Toledo organizations and the second oldest tradition next to Homecoming. It will be held on Saturday, March 30, beginning at 5:00 PM at Savage Arena. Tickets are free for the event but a donation is appreciated.

An important part of Songfest has always been the philanthropic mission attached to it, and each year a worthy organization is chosen as the recipient. This year will benefit Zepf Center. Deb Flores, CEO of Zepf Center, states “we are honored and thrilled to be chosen for funding from Songfest. The funds raised will assist almost 10,000 individuals with mental health and substance abuse issues and provide hope that life can and will get better.”

The current sponsors of Songfest are Blue Key National Honor Fraternity and Mortar Board National Honor Society, both of which hold their recognition and tapping ceremonies during this event. There are three separate competitions: Men's, Women's and Co-ed Competition, which are composed of the many Greek, Academic, Religious, and other UT organizations.

Songfest, UT’s second oldest standing tradition, began in spring of 1937 with a group of six fraternities singing old college songs on the lawn behind University Hall. Women began their own singing competition in 1940 which consisted of sororities and one independent group performing choral arrangements. Songfest has continued to expand since its inception in 1937. More groups now participate, awards ceremonies are held, and lavish production numbers are prepared.

Songfest involves a few hundred students directly and the entire campus indirectly. Everyone at The University of Toledo takes pride in having Songfest annually during the spring semester. This event is great ways for students to get involved, actively participate in tradition, and engage in a little friendly competition-what more could you ask for.

Now on sale are the event T shirts which are sold in the student union January-March. They will also be sold the day of the event.
